ADC Joza (Assumption Development Center) - Strategic Communications
In my other project, I took up strategic communications this year because I was interested in seeing another way a journalism degree can be used. We helped a NGO company, the ADC Joza to generate content for the organisation to promote the work that they were doing in the community. They help empower the people of Joza and their small businesses to grow as a community. I was in a group with three other students, Lindeka Namba, Cayla Mandean and Mohau Vuma. Cayla and I specialised in Multimedia this year whilst Lindeka and Mohau were video students. I enjoyed the experience a lot because I saw how it was to work with real clients, which we do not always do. It was also lovely to see what the hard work that we put in was able to produce at the end and see our client happy with it.

It was something out of my comfort zone and it pushed me to be creative and to communicate with people more than I am used to. It was also a nice break from being indoors everyday behind my laptop in lectures every week and actually getting the time to go
The work that we did somehow links to my capstone project because we used to go and interview small business owners, and I would formulate some of my questions from those sessions. Life in Joza and Zimbabwe is similar, so I enjoyed hearing about other people’s experiences. I learnt how to think on my feet as well as to make myself useful in the effort of producing a very good project. We also saw how important it is to be able to improvise because things do not always go to plan.
I also found myself thinking more about life after university and where I would like to work eventually. Journalism was starting to feel like a wrong choice because it can not be practiced well in my country, but after this course, I find myself being open to other options that might be out there.
